About 90% of cancer deaths are from the development of secondary tumor growths. As cancer cells divide they deplete surrounding tissue of nutrients, especially the amino acid glutamine. Most cells can not survive without glutamine, so cancer cells signal to non-cancerous stromal cells in the tumor to synthesize glutamine for them. This project shows that the glucocorticoid receptor is part of the signaling pathway causing the release of glutamine into the tumor microenvironment.
