Internalized HIV Stigma Among Women Giving Birth in Tanzania: A Mixed Methods Study

This study aimed to describe internalized HIV stigma among women living with HIV (WLHIV) giving birth, identify factors associated with internalized HIV stigma, and examine qualitatively the impacts of internalized HIV stigma on the childbirth experience. Postpartum WLHIV were enrolled from March to July 2022 at six clinics in both rural and urban settings in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania. Results indicate that WLHIV giving birth experience high rates of internalized HIV stigma.
